Every morning, as I arrive at our GRACE: Give Refugees a Chance office, I see Alex standing on the corner. He doesnât have a stall or a standâjust a handful of books and candy, hoping for a few sales to support his family. Despite his struggles, he always greets me with a smile. But this time, tears welled up in his eyes.
âMy grandson was born,â he told me, his voice breaking.
His daughter, MarĂa, a 19-year-old Venezuelan migrant, had given birth prematurely. We knew the baby was coming and had already provided some diapers in December to help them prepare. But now, the situation was much more dire: Baby Ian needed oxygen to survive, and the family had to pay $25 a day for the oxygen tank rental. Alex had run out of money.
The Burden of Migration and Financial Hardship
Starting over in a new country is never easy. Itâs even harder when you have no support network and face a medical emergency. Alex, who has only one leg and uses a painful prosthesis, works tirelessly to provide for his daughter and grandson. But with unpredictable earnings, covering medical expenses was impossible.
At GRACE, we knew we had to act. We rushed to their home with our oxygen machine, so they wouldnât have to pay for oxygen any longer. We also brought more diapers and essentials.
When we arrived, Alex opened his fridge. Inside, there was nothing but water and ice cubes.
The need went beyond oxygen. Thanks to Global Action, we were also able to provide a bag of food, ensuring that MarĂa, Ian, and Alex wouldnât go to bed hungry. Itâs moments like these that remind us why partnerships and donors are so crucial to our mission.
A Place of Support for Migrant Mothers
A few weeks later, baby Ian was doing much better, and MarĂa was able to attend our 7th Baby Shower for Migrant Mothers. These gatherings are more than just celebrations; they are a lifeline for mothers who feel isolated, scared, and overwhelmed in a foreign country.
At the event, the mothers played games, shared experiences, and received a care kit filled with blankets, soap, shampoo, diapers, and other essential baby items. More importantly, they found a sense of belonging.
Motherhood is never easy, and even more so when you’re a migrant, displaced, and facing economic hardship. At GRACE, we want every mother to know that she is not aloneâthat there is a community ready to support her.
